Why are we facilitating Act for The River?
Bin There, Done That is designed to bridge the gap between awareness and action in sustainability efforts. Natural ecosystems—whether rivers, forests, or urban green spaces—are vital to biodiversity and human well-being, yet they are heavily polluted due to human negligence. This experience aligns with the Rebalance Institute’s commitment to fostering environmental responsibility by providing hands-on learning in waste management and sustainability.
Participants not only remove waste from these areas but also understand the broader environmental impact of pollution. They learn practical strategies for sorting, recycling, and responsible disposal of waste while developing teamwork, leadership, and problem-solving skills. By engaging in this activity, individuals become more conscious of their daily choices, contributing to a long-term shift towards sustainability. The experience is designed to be replicable, encouraging participants to take these learnings beyond the clean-up drive and into their communities.

About the author & organisation
The River Rangers is an environmental initiative dedicated to cleaning and restoring the Hooghly River, a distributary of the Ganges, in West Bengal, India. Since its inception in 2019, the project has engaged local communities, educational institutions, and NGOs in weekly clean-up drives and awareness campaigns. The initiative is facilitated by Enakshi Majumder, who has played a key role in organizing, managing volunteers, and ensuring the success of these sustainability efforts.
The River Rangers project was the brainchild of Lochie Burke and Pauline Laravoire, who envisioned a community-driven effort to combat river pollution. Since 2019, the initiative has mobilized volunteers, removed significant amounts of plastic and waste, and educated people on sustainable waste management, making a lasting environmental impact.
